There are definitely increased cases of identifying neuro-diverse conditions such as ADHD, Autism, etc. It is not for me to define why, but I will try and mirror challenges neuro-diverse people have when facing modern life. I’m particularly cognizant of this when working with Scouts. Is bad behaviour actually unidentified neuro-diversity? It’s not for me to make that call, but it is on me to work with that in mind.
Noise levels
Noise levels can often get high, particularly as people get more excited and competitive. But not everyone is comfortable with this.
The obvious solution here would be to recommend ear defenders. But, these are bulky and and often block the important noises out, too. Walking around with ear defenders will make the individual stand out and adds to potential for isolation.
Another solution would be using a quieter zone, where an individual may feel more comfortable, but this means they’ll still need to return to the noisy environment and again, may miss the important noises. It’s also a concern for Safeguarding and situations where you mustn’t allow a child to be left alone.
Another possible solution is to use something like Loops, which baffle the harsher noises but don’t inhibit hearing, so the important noises (such as instructions) still gets through. They’re also small enough to not be noticeable, even in a small group setting, being nothing larger than a hearing aid.
Add and reinforce structure
Some people are chaotic. Some need structure. It is beneficial to both to go through plans for the session or day before the event starts. Equally, a list of reminders helps take the pressure of people to remember to do tasks.
At the start of sessions, I always try and give a run-down of the session and what we’re planning to do. When will we be playing a game? What activities will we be doing? A reminder of why we are here also helps as a reminder for our common values.
This provides structure. It gives you the opportunity to remind the more chaotic mind where we should be focusing. It offers those who crave structure the comfort that they are able to concentrate on the activity at hand within a particular time and space.
Texture
Some people find certain textures uncomfortable. Maybe it’s a textile or liquid. Or maybe they don’t like getting their hands dirty!
Perhaps providing an option for wearing gloves (latex free, of course!) to avoid that icky feeling of getting your hands dirty. Maybe that will be enough to avoid uncomfortable textures, but if not, a replacement may be needed. It pays to have a note of these preferences ahead of time so you can magic up an alternative.
