And the new Third Thursday venue is …

  • Isle-of-Man
  • IOM-Social-Media-Club, Third-Thursday
  • 1 Comment

We’ve had a really good response to our request for votes for our new venue for the Isle of Man Social Media Club’s Third Thursday venue. Thank you to everyone who participated.

The shortlisted venues were (in no particular order):

  • Coffee Exchange
  • Bar George
  • Jabberwocky
  • Carnival Lounge

We also asked for any other ideas, and we received a few great establishments as alternative options. Although we got enough votes in for the main poll, we’ll certainly bear these in mind for future.

It was a close a one, with votes being taken to the “second round” due to a tie between Bar George and Jabberwocky. Oh the tension.

So we’ll start making arrangements for Jabberwocky to book us a table for the next Third Thursday, on 19th December. We’ll be upstairs, where it might be a bit quieter and we have more room.

Pie chart representing survey results

Jabberwocky do great food and is a favourite of some of our regulars, particularly for language evenings. With lots of room upstairs with comfy chairs we should be able to grow to larger groups as we need.

The full results can be viewed in on the Excel Live spreadsheet.

We hope to see you for the final Third Thursday of 2013.

Isle of Man Social Media Club Third Thursday – Change of venue

  • Isle-of-Man
  • IOM-Social-Media-Club, Third-Thursday
  • 1 Comment

Pen ticking a boxAs our regulars will know, we’ve had to change from our usual venue, Paparazzi, due to it closing. The restaurant was particularly good for our meet-ups. There was always enough space and the staff were always welcoming and most helpful in accommodating our widely changing head counts!

This has given us the opportunity to consider where we will hold our future meet-ups. We’ve been holding them at Coffee Exchange on Athol Street for the last two months, who have been most accommodating for us.

Having thrown a few venues around (not literally) at our last meeting, we came up with a short-list of possibilities:

Coffee Exchange

Remain at Coffee Exchange. It’s light and airy, central and the staff are friendly.

Bar George

Good food, friendly staff with lots of room which we can book ahead of time. Bar George is on Hill Street (behind Athol Street) and is pretty central.

Jabberwocky

Jabberwocky are on Duke Street so are fairly central and have a room upstairs which we might be able to use.

Carnival Lounge

A new place which might be worth trying. It’s on Strand Street, further down towards The Strand Centre.

We’re looking for somewhere with lots of space so we can add more chairs, fairly easy parking and a central location so we can all make it safely!

We’ve decided to create a short survey to gauge your reaction. As it’s Christmas, we need to contact the venues fairly soon to make sure they can accommodate us. So please take a minute or two to vote for your preferred venue, or add your own idea:

[ sorry, voting closed ]

We’ll take the result on Thursday 5th December and contact the preferred venue to make sure they can accommodate us. If the venue is unavailable, we may just need to try your second option 😉

As usual, we’ll remind everyone and publish the chosen venue in the week preceding December’s Third Thursday, which will be on 19 December 2013.

Isle of Man Social Media Third Thursday, 17th May

  • Work-Life
  • IOM-Social-Media-Club, Third-Thursday

PizzaAs usual, it’s coming up to the Third Thursday of the month and it’s time to let you all know that once again, we’ll be having a bit of a bite and chat with like-minded tweeps, peeps and n00bs about all things social media and maybe a bit of general gadget craziness.

We meet every Third Thursday of the month and have a bit of a meal or pizza at Paparazzi, at 12.30pm. You don’t need to be an expert or an addict, and we encourage everyone and anyone to come and join us and have a chat with like-minded people. We held an evening event on Friday 11th May (just last week!) which was really well attended, bringing a great mix of people together which included teachers, Manx speakers, geeks and very good friends.

So if you use Twitter or Facebook, come join us and introduce yourself. If you use social media professionally or professionally casually, we’d love to meet you.

Hope to see you then!

Evening Tweet-up – Friday 11 May 2012

  • Work-Life
  • IOM-Social-Media-Club, Tweet-up

CocktailsIt’s been a while since we last did an evening Tweet-up for the Isle of Man Social Media Club and we’ve had enquiries so let’s do it again!

These evenings are a great way for people who can’t make our usual lunch-time meetings at Paparazzi to attend and catch-up and meet their tweeps in a rather *ahem* informal atmosphere. Whether you’re a social media guru or a n00b, you’re more than welcome to join in. And you don’t even have to “check-in”.

Same deal as usual. Due to the excellent service and support from The Velvet Lobster coffee shop on the last tweet-ups, we’re going to stick with what we know and start there for their Jolly Friday home-made cocktails and a bit of a bite. Following that, we can decide on the night. Guys and Dolls has re-opened if you fancy a bit of kitsch 80’s pop or maybe the more mainstream music at Bordello’s may be more to your taste.

So here’s the deal. We need to track numbers for the venues so in my true form, I keep a spreadsheet. If you’d like to join us, let me know by commenting on this post, or contacting me using the links on the right and I’ll make sure you’re on the list.

Hope you can make it! Velvet Lobster, Friday 11 May at 6pm onwards.

While we try and keep a relatively memorable frequency of these throughout the year, feel free to arrange something with your fellow tweeps outside of these events. We’d be more than happy to help promote your own events. Drop us a line by contacting either myself (using the contact links on the right) or Owen.

Isle of Man Social Media Club – Third Thursday – 19th April 2012

  • Work-Life
  • IOM-Social-Media-Club, Third-Thursday
  • Leave a comment

PizzaWith Owen off to sunny climes, it falls to me to host this week’s Third Thursday as part of Isle of Man’s Social Media Club social activities. And how appropriate having just launched my new blog design!

If you’re unfamiliar with the format, we hook up over a quick pizza (or salad if you’re that way unclined) at Paparazzi at 12.30pm on the Third Thursday of every month. This month, that’s the 19th April. No complications are involved, pay for your own meal and drinks and we welcome anyone to join whether you’re a Twitter expert or are wondering whether to join the rest of the family on Facebook.

If you are familiar, get your friends and colleagues down and spread the word!

We get a variety of people attending, of all IT/social media skill levels and persuasions from über-geek to public relations professionals. You’re bound to find someone to chat over your thoughts or gain insight on the various ways and means you can use social media either personally or professionally. If you can’t stay for the full hour, just drop in and say “Hi!”.

Hope you can make it!

Evening Tweet-up on Friday 13th January

  • Work-Life
  • IOM-Social-Media-Club, Tweet-up

While we regularly meet for the Third Thursday in every month for chat over a pizza about social media, technology and marketing, we like to spread our wings now and then and arrange an evening event. This allows more people to attend as it is out of work time and people can stay for longer, but it also gives our friends outside Douglas the chance to join in the chat and meet their fellow tweeps.

This month we’re planning on having a bit of a bite at The Velvet Lobster on Friday 13th January. It’s their Jolly Time, which means cocktails are cheaper (and they are very good, made from fresh ingredients). After food, we’re hoping to grab a taxi down to the new Crescent Nightclub which has just re-opened for some frivolity, music and dancing.

Hopefully there’s enough for everyone in the night. If you plan on coming and so we can book tables, please contact me by tweeting me @programx or leaving a message in the comments and I’ll add you to the spreadsheet!

Hope to see you there!
